The Importance of Water

As we've all learned in school, the human body of composed of 75% water. I am not sure, but I think that is applicable to most if not all living things, Pit Bulls included.
Many pet owners fill their pet's water bowl whenever it looks low. How wrong! Firstly, one must understand the importance of water to animals, and yes, the Almighty American Pit Bull. Water is a cooling agent. Yes, animals and humans drink water because it is means of quenching one's thirst. In the case of animals, they drink water to regulate their body temperature, to stay cool.
It is highly recommended to replenish your Pit Bull's water bowl at least twice a day, even if it isn't low. Once in the morning before going to school or work and again in the evening when you are to return home.
Changing the water twice a day helps to maintain cleanliness. Throughout the course of the day, there may be a number of things that may have fallen into your Pit Bull's water bowl, leaves, bird droppings, insects and the list goes on. So to help prevent some illnesses you Pit Bull may get due to bad water, it is highly advisable to change the water bowl regularly. Make a habit out of it
Most importantly, it is a great way to demonstrate the value of your companion, The Almighty American Pit Bull Terrier.

Bathing Your Pit Bull

The American Pit Bull is a short haired breed. Therefore, it is not necessary to bathe them so often. One would think that by bathing one's Pit Bull on a regular basis he will be clean and tick-free and flea-free. On the contrary, too much bathing isn't good for both the dog and the owner. For one, when one is to bathe their dog, they are not only washing away dirt, but they are also washing away natural oils in the skin to help keep the hair soft, shiny and healthy. Too much washing or bathing will dry out the skin which in turn will cause the hair not to shine.

So with Soldier, my American Pit Bull, I would bathe him once every two weeks, usually on a late Sunday morning. No one wants to be under the hot sun bathing their dog, not even me. The dog himself do not want to be under the sun. So, I usually would bathe Soldier around 11:00am. I find it to be a great time. It is not so cool, yet it is hot enough to assist me in drying him after the bath.

Since I reccommending that one should bathe your Pit Bull once every two weeks doesn't mean that one should use a strong shampoo thinking that there is so much dirt on your dog. Just the opposite. I suggest using a mild shampoo on your Pit Bull. As stated earlier, bathing your Pit Bull too often will wash away very important natural oils in the skin. A strong shampoo would make matters even worse.

Soldier is not a house Pit Bull. He stays outside 24-7 and is never allowed in my house. In fact he has never been inside a building other than the vet's office. One would think under such condition, Soldier would be filthy after two weeks of not being bathed. On the contrary he is very clean, not only because of bathing but because I brush him as well.

Brushing your Pit Bull will promote the skin to produce natural oils which are good for the the skin and hair. Use a medium hard bristled brush once a day. One do not have to make a chore out of it. When you come home from work, just pick up a brush and stroke him a few time for about 3 to 5 minutes. That is all. Nothing more nor less. It is a great way to bond with your Pit Bull.

I hope these few tips will help you. In the future, I intend to write more in detail about bathing your Pit Bull. Until then take care.
